Death Ends Kin of Betsy Ross, March 20, 1937
In the death Saturday of Mrs. Phebe Peasley, 83 at her home in Greenacres, there passed a distant cousin of Betsy Ross, designer of the American flag.
Mrs. Peasley was the widow of Mount Peasley, whom she married in a pioneer sod house at Rising Sun., Kan., October 8, 1871. Mr. Peasley, who served with the Union Army in the Civil War, died in 1935, the last survivor of Nathan Gregg post, G.A.R., Spokane.
Mrs. Peasley was the daughter of William Newton and Ann Ross cousin of Betsy. She was born in Hancock County, Ill and went with her parents to South Dakota by ox team in the early days of Dakotah territory. At the time of her marriage she was living with her parents in the frontier town of York Neb.
In 1902 the Peasleys settled in the Rock Creek valley, six miles northeast of Latah. In 1915 they moved to Greenacres. Mrs. Peasley was active in the work of the Methodist church and its ladies' aid society.
Funeral services will be held in the Greenacres Methodist Church today at 2:30 p.m. with burial in "The Pines" at Opportunity.
Mrs. Peasley is survived by two sons, Earl D., Kellogg, Idaho and Roy A., Portland, Oregon, three daughters, Mrs. Olive Johnson, Spokane; Mrs. Ida Davidson, Greenacres, and Mrs. Laura Dick, Jerome, Idaho;
34 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, James, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Cecil Shontell
