Anaru Haua

This sketch was done by Horatio Gordon Robley (soldier and artist) who left with the 68th Regiment in 1864 for the New Zealand land wars. He also made reference to Anarus's wife, Mary (thank you Wendy)

Robley writes: i remember seeing in 1865 a white woman, the wife of a native, her undecorated face showed that she had not undergone the painful process. A portrait of her husband, a sailor named Anaru, is sketched from life.....(Wendy)
