About Murdoch MacRae

Murdoch Macrae, who was murdered while out hunting in Glenlic by a man whom he caught stealing his property, and his body was not found for fourteen days. He left a young widow and two sons. Several elegies composed on the occasion have been preserved, and some of them are of a very high order, possessing great merit. One of the elegies contains a verse in which all of Murdoch’s brothers are mentioned, except Alexander who had probably died before:

Sad are thy seven beloved brothers, the parson though profound is his learning, though his office is one of giving comfort, yet he surpassed the others in his grief. First among them is Duncan of the Silver Cups, then Christopher and the two clergymen, Farquhar, Allan of the auburn hair, and Hugh, who was sad after them.

The first parson mentioned was his brother the Rev. Donald of Kintail.
