About Muriwai

"Muriwai was the sister of Toroa, captain of the Mataatua canoe, and her name is given to a cave at Whakatāne where the sacred talisman from the Mataatua was placed. When her two children drowned near Tauranga, Muriwai placed a prohibition on the coastline from Ngā Kuri a Whārei to Tihirau. These boundaries were later used to define the Bay of Plenty." (McKinnon, 2015).
