About NN NN

"Based on what Alfred said about his parentage I ordered the book North Carolina Bastardy Bonds by Betty & Edwin Camin, since it listed the bonds for Buncombe County. Under that county, a Susannah Hunnicutt was listed for Oct 1832, the month & year Alfred said he was born, a "base-born German Jew" in Buncombe County, so I've no doubt we've found his mother. You probably know about the bonds. In NC at that time if an unmarried woman was pregnant she was called into court to name the father (to post a bond) post bond herself or have others post it for her (if she refused & couldn't post bond or get someone to post it for her she went
to jail!). The people who posted for her were not necessarily related. If Alfred's father was a German Jew, a Burgin, as we've heard, it doesn't appear he posted bond. The three bondsmen were William Davis, Thomas Barrett and Absolem Metcalf. This is all the information we have. However, just eighteen months before, Apr 1831, a Moses Hunicutt and Jacob Hunicutt posted bond for a Nelly Sprouce. So maybe if these two were Susannah's family, they had already posted a bond and could not post another one (?). It would be great if someone could get a copy of the original bond at Raleigh in the state archives and post it here, as it should have more information. Also, if the court minutes for Buncombe at that time could be search and copied for more information.

I also looked at the census of 1840, looking for a Hunnicutt/Honeycutt with a boy age 5-10 in the household. There were 7 Hunnicutts listed in 1830 in Buncombe, none in 1840, but part of Buncombe had been made into Yancey Co, and in 1840 the Honeycutts with same given names were listed in Yancey Co, spelling of surname changed. There were four males with a male in household between 5-10 years old: Nathan (the older one) had one, Sampson had 3, David had 2, and Jacob had 1. Also a Polly and a Jane, listed as heads of their household (widows?) were in the 30-40 age bracket and had several children each. Polly had one male in the 5-10 bracket, Jane had 2 in that bracket. There are a number of Susannah Honeycutts, now to find out which one was Alfred's mother and what happened to her. I looked these census entries up because Alfred was also said to have been "adopted" or "raised" by his grandfather, which now appears to be Susannah's father." ~ Amanda per https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.honeycutt/800.1.3
