Arthur Reeves

A freedman and former wagon driver on the Santa Fe Trail. Judge Paul L. Brady states in his 2005 book The Black Badge that he is the father of Bass Reeves, the famed U.S. deputy marshal and Jane Reeves Brady through slave Paralee Stewart. Reeves Family legend states that Arthur took his surname from a Santa Fe Trail commissioner, who allegedly assisted Arthur in gaining his freedom.

The 1880 U.S. Census states that Bass' father was born in Arkansas, but the 1900 Census says that his father was born in Texas. I think the latter is probably the most accurate as the 1880 has some other errors. Bass was also in the area to give the census enumerator information on himself and his parents.
