About Nancy Ann Lawhon

Nancy was the first of twelve children born to Nancy (Lee) and William Carr. Born of William & Nancy Ann Lee Carr Married: February 20, 1840 in Beaumont, Jefferson, TX, to David Lawhon. Had 16 children∼Nancy Carr was born in St. Martins Parrish, Louisiana in 1822. Her headstone incorrectly shows the year of 1824. Family records and the US census of 1850 and 1860 are consistent in showing her birth year as 1822. She moved to Texas with her parents and family when Texas was part of Mexico. Following the Texas Revolution, Nancy and David E. Lawhon were married on Feb 20, 1840 in Jefferson County, Texas. She had ten children, all of whom were born in Jefferson Co. with the exception of her last child who was born in Bastrop County in 1863. It is believed that the family moved to the Bastrop area sometime between 1858 and 1861. They built their home in William County on the west side of the Marmaduke Gardner property line. Four of David and Nancy’s children married four of Marmaduke and Rhoda Caroline Gardner’s children creating a very close bond between the two families. David Lawhon had a wonderful voice and late in the evenings he frequently would take a song book and sit on the porch and sing. Nancy loved to hear him sing. She raised a family that eventually owned land for almost two miles on both sides of what is now FM 619, which included the Sam Smith Springs that later became known as Lawhon Springs. Her children included ordained ministers and prominent attorneys.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 23 2021, 23:29:46 UTC
