Not the daughter of Capt. Joseph Martin, Sr., of Albemarle County
Category:Iredell County, North Carolina, Early Settlers
Nancy Ann, possibly Martin, was born in 1741 or 1742 in Augusta County, Virginia. There are other genealogies that show her birth in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. She died in Iredell County, North Carolina in 1809.
She married Joseph Millsaps in 1767. Joseph was a Revolutionary War Veteran and listed in the Iredell County, North Carolina Census in 1790, 1800, and 1810. The DAR record only shows a verified name of "Ann" as Joseph's spouse with no confirmed last name. No burial location for Nancy or Joseph has been found.
Shirley Landen reports in a 2001 message post that several old letterson the McHargue family are found in the Laurel Co Historical Society quarterly publication "Branches of Laurel". These include an 1854 letter from Elizabeth Stanberry McHargue (1802 – 1881) to Malinda and William Stanberry, who had moved to MacDonald County Missouri in 1846.She is relating news about her husband William McHargue's death the prior fall of 1853. She states in the letter: "And Bill was buried byhis Father and Mother Nancy. She died in 48 not long after you movedin 46. She had lived with us for 25 years or so. She was Nancy Millsaps in Irdell Co NC. She was a sister to Mary who married John McHargue II, Bill uncle who moved to Mo in 27. I am told her Father Joseph Millsaps folks was from Penn and Joe was born in NC. Nancy was named for her Mother Nancy Ann Martin but was called Ann. I remember Joe asan old man coming to see Dad and spending the night. You ask me anything and I'll tell you what I remember. I am glad you want to know and you are keeping the letters you get from your family and reading them over and over to your children so they will know their family here. The McHargues were from Penn also. But had not been there long when they moved to NC. They came by boat from Ireland and Scotland. The McBroom in NC came the same way and at the same time. Must have taken a lot of nerve to do all that travel"
