Born of German Jewish ancestry, she began her career on Broadway in 1927, performing mostly supporting roles in short-run plays with the exception of "Lady in the Dark" (1941 to 1942), "The Doughgirls" (1942 to 1944), and "Romanoff and Juliet" (1957 to 1958). In 1941 she moved to Los Angeles, California and played supporting roles, usually portraying beautiful sophisticates, in various films, including "Reunion in France" (1942), "Keep Your Powder Dry" (1945), "Dishonored Lady" (1947), "The Snake Pit" (1948), "The Law and the Lady" (1951), "The Girl Next Door' (1953), "Anastasia" (1956), and "The Day of the Locusts" (1975). Form the 1950s into the 1970s she guest starred on numerous television series, including "I Love Lucy" (1954), "Guestward, Ho!" (1960), "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1964), "Mayberry RFD" (1970), "The Brady Bunch" (1974), and "Phyllis" (1976). From 1971 to 1972 she joined the cast of the CBS television daytime soap opera "Search for Tomorrow" as 'Helen Collins', the mother of characters Wade and Clay Collins. In 1982 she reprised her role in the made-for-TV spin-off films that were made after the show's demise, along with the animated spinoff, "Gilligan's Planet." Her final silver screen appearance was in "Beverly Hills Brats" (1989) and her last performance was in the 1990 television film "I'm Dangerous Tonight." She was married to actor Louis Calhern from 1934 until their divorce in 1942. She died from cancer at the age of 90.
