Nathan Kinsman Knight, who was at the Haun's Mill Massacre on October 30, 1838, in writing of the night following the massacre, stated, "I prevailed on them [the women at Haun's Mill] to sing 'Moroni's Lamentation,' contained in our hymn book" (RLDS History of the Church 2:254). The title, "Moroni's Lamentation," was given to the hymn because it tells of the destruction of the Nephite people (Mormon 3:1-23).
