About Nathan Lucas
Feb 22, 1827 - "We have to record today a great public loss which this island has sustained. The Honorable Nathan Lucas a Member of the H.M. Council and C.J. Court of Common Pleas for the precinct of St. Michael departed this life suddenly on Wednesday morning at Worthing the residence of E. H. Senhouse Esq. The remains of the Honorable gentleman were interred in the family grave under the pulpit of the cathedral yesterday amid the tears and lamentations of his numerous domestics and plantation slaves who seemed fully sensible that they lost a humane and indulgent master. The funeral was attended by his honour the President, the Members of Council, etc. Nathan Lucas born 1761 of pure English stock resident for 5 generations was of Nathan Lucas (died 1771). He was educated as a surgeon but as the owner of Mount Clapham plantation he was interested in agriculture. His daughter married Charles Kingsley and was mother of the distinguished man of letters Rev Charles Kingsley (1819 - 1875)
