The following link and information is from Roots web. I have tried to contact Ed Mathis, but believe he has passed on. I am grateful for his research. I also added Cherokee County NC because this area was once Cherokee Territory .http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2026353&id=I675I'm assuming that Nathaniel and Nancy were the parents of George W. for two reasons. 1) According to the 1850 census they were living next door to George, Rachel, and David in Polk Co., TN, and were about the right ages to be his parents. 2) My father and uncle said that George had a brother that moved to Etowah or near Athens, TN (McMinn Co.). The 1850 Polk Co. census records that Nathaniel and Nancy had a son, Daniel H., and a daughter, Martha M. Records show that Daniel H. married Celia Melton and moved to McMinn Co.

In the 1820 census, there is a Nathaniel Mathis in Haywood Co., NC, and a Nathan Mathis in Rockingham Co., NC. Both of these are the right age to be ours. According to the 1850 Polk Co., TN census, our Nathaniel and Nancy were in NC in 1823 (birth of George W.), in GA in 1832 (birth of Daniel H.), and in GA in 1836 (birth of Martha M.). There was a Nathan Mathis in Habersham Co., GA in the 1840 census. The ages of Nathan and wife match up with their ages listed in the 1850 census. Two sons, one age 5-10 (might be Daniel H.) and the other age 15-20 (might be George W.) are listed as well as three daughters, one age 5-10, and two age 10-15. The ages do not quite match for Martha M., who according to the 1850 census was born abt 1836. If this is our Nathaniel, I don't know who the other two daughters are. There was a Sarah Mathis who married Hiram King in Habersham Co., 6/11/1835. She could be one of George's older sisters.

There was a Nathan Matthews who married a Nancy Davis, 26 Dec 1815 in Lincoln Co., NC. Don't know if this is ours.

Shawna Hall wrote this to me: "I'm very interested in your Nathaniel Mathis, do you have any other children listed for him? I'm looking for the parents of David Mathis b. @1818 in NC. He married Elizabeth Jones 10-10-1839 in Haywood Co. My grandmother told me before she died that she thought David's father was named Nathaniel. I have your George W. and Rachel in my Mathis file and I know that he had sons named David and Daniel. My David died in Towns Co., Ga. in 1880 He also had a son named Daniel."

Also this from Shawna: "Someone once sent me info that said there was a David Mathis/Matthews b. abt 1765 somewhere in NC who had sons named John, Henry, Nathaniel (b. Cabarrus or Mecklenburg Co.), Jacob, Peter and William, but he didn't send me any sources and I was not able to contact him again."

There is a David Mathews who was in most of the early censuses in Cumberland Co., NC who matches the age shown above. Change Date: 8 APR 2002 at 09:07:02
