About Nathan (Nat) Tanzman

This information on Nat comes from his wife Pauline's obituary:

[Pauline] is predeceased by her husband, Nathan Tanzman [...] She met her future husband, Nathan Tanzman at The Tanzville Hotel and married him on March 6, 1943. She moved to Parksville, NY in 1944 where she and Nat ran The Tanzville Hotel in Parksville, NY until 1984. She and Nat moved to Albany, NY in 1993 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

This information is from Peter Paskin Yronwode, the nephew of Pauline Paskin Tanzman:

"Tanzville Notes:

"I think the land had been farmed before the Tanzman family decided to make it a resort, and Nat acquired the hotel from his father after returning from WW II, where he had been a heavy equipment operator in the army. Nat built the lake himself with a bulldozer, thanks to his army training, and had it stocked with fish, including non-kosher catfish. I was always amazed that we could catch them and not be allowed to cook them. I think Nat was quite observant, his wife Pauline probably less so. Nat's brother ran a kosher meat business which may have supplied the hotel. This brother's daughter (Nat’s niece), Natalie, was my first teen crush.

"The hotel enforced strict religious requirements to accommodate the customers. The kitchen was strictly kosher and meals followed all the rules (no cream in the coffee at meat meals, etc.). The staff even collected ashtrays from public areas before sundown on Fridays to remove the temptation to stray. Kitchen staff were disciplined and could be fired for violating strict kashrut requirements. But it was easy to find a Shabbas Goy, since many of the staff were Puerto Rican.

"It wasn’t all oppressive religion. I remember one time going to shul with Nat in Parksville or Liberty. I don’t remember how old I was, but it was Simchat Torah and the older men in the congregation carried the torahs around the central pulpit area of the old European style synagogue, with their talits around their shoulders, singing at the tops of their voices and dancing. It was quite ecstatic … the closest I ever came to an inspirational experience in a Jewish context.

"The pictures here of the entrance steps ... that was a favorite place for me. The masonry pillars were painted white and lit all night with globe lights on top. Beautiful big moths would come to the lights and settle on the pillars, where I would find them in the morning. These beautiful insects are probably just about gone from that area now, but I remember finding them quite often. It was wonderful."
