Death of an Aged Citizen
How rapidly do our old citizens pass away! Every few weeks, there seems to be another gathering of some good man or woman to the tomb, whose presence here had appeared to be a material constituent of the community's existence! We are led to this thought by hearing the tolling of the bell, calling to the church the friends of Mr. Nathan Whitmire, who departed this life on last Sunday night. He was some four score years of age, and had been very feeble for many months past. Mr. Whitmire had been living in Greenville for near thirty years – having taken up his abode here when the Furman University was first established in this place, then a village, for the purpose of educating his sons, which he successfully accomplished. He was quiet and unobtrusive in his character, kind, genial and plain. We knew him well, as did nearly all of the older residents of Greenville, and can truly say of all for them, that he was a downright honest man. If he ever said an unkind word of anyone, or committed a deed that injured anyone, it never came to our knowledge. On the contrary, he felt kindly to all, and many are the deeds of kindness that he has performed, whereby those less fortunate in their circumstances of life, have been relieved of their pressing wants and encouraged in the work of effort. He was nearer exempt from fault than the most of men. He loved religion and education, and in his conduct practiced the former. Dr. Furman yesterday morning, in remarks over the bier in the Baptist Church, made a most fitting tribute to the character of the deceased, in alluding to his many admirable qualities of head and heart, and as exemplified in his life.
Mr. Whitmire was a native of Newberry County. He leaves an aged widow and two sons and two daughters to share the good name he has left, besides many friends.
