Nathan 'Nate' van Reenen (1997 - 2013)

Nathan (16), a York High school boy, jumped out of a moving car to assist a woman who was being mugged, and was stabbed in the neck, near the Moses Mabhida Stadium, in Durban on 7th December 2013. The knife pierced his jugular, and he died in Addington Hospital.

  • The male suspect, Scelo Chiya, appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate’s Court charged with theft and murder. The court heard that Chiya had been arrested for the murder in December, but had been released when he could not be identified. However, Prosecutor Blackie Swart said police had “strong evidence” against Chiya. He was to appear in court again for a bail application.
