Note by Judith Miller, 1/1/2016: There is some problem here with dates and identity of Moses Ayers' supposed father, Nathaniel Ayers: Son of Nathaniel Ayers 1700-1809 (improbable - source?) and Rhoda Ayers 1700-1809 (also improbable - source?)

The Nathaniel Ayers/Ayres who died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in 1777 first appeared as a young man in the records of Baltimore County, Maryland, in March 1723/24. He may have gone briefly to Lunenburg County, Virginia, in 1747-48, since a "Nathaniel Ayers" was in the tax list for 1748. He moved to Halifax County, Virginia, by 1755, apparently after selling his Baltimore County land (called "Buck Range") in 1754. He died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, before 22 May 1777--the date on which his will was proven in court. Since Pittsylvania was formed from part of Halifax, and Halifax was formed from part of Lunenburg, he may have gone to the same general area of Virginia in 1747-48 and again in 1754-55, then died without moving away from that same area of Virginia.
The Nathaniel Ayers who was born 4 March 1700/01 in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, seems to have left no trace of himself in any records after his birth. The people who compiled "Nixon Family Memorials" found no trace of him in New Jersey, and erroneously concluded that he was the man who died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. ....
I have come across an unsubstantiated claim in "History of the Treman, Tremaine, Truman families" by Treman and Poole at page 1191, which described a Nathaniel Ayers born on 4 March "1700", who married some unknown woman, had a son named Jonathan (b. 1739), and died at Basking Ridge, NJ, 12 Feb 1777. Treman and Poole placed this claim in the portion of their book (published in 1901) which included a lot of claimed lineages which could not be shown to be linked to John and Mary (Walker) Ayers of NJ or the Ayers of Massachusetts. That indicates to me that no records--from New Jersey or elsewhere--were cited in support of the claim.
