Nathaniel Basset Francis

Nathaniel served during the Revolutionary War of 1776 in the Virginia Militia.

Nathaniel Francis was in Buckingham County in the Virginia census of 1810 with five boys and six girls in his household.

In 1818 Nathaniel Francis left Virginia with his family and at least one (perhaps more) married sons and their families. These pioneer families crossed the Cumberland Mountains together by ox cart.

We know that John B. Francis (born circa 1788 in Virginia) stayed in Virginia until 1829. Then he and his brother William A. Francis traveled with their families to the frontier of Franklin County Tennessee in time to be counted in the 1830 census.

The father, Nathaniel Sr. must have died just prior to the 1830 census. His widow, Leean Francis is shown, age between 60 and 70, still had three children still in her household. Their sons John, Joseph, William, and Byrd live in close proximity to the widow, who was their mother. This leads us to believe that the father died about the time the last two sons came from Virginia.

By the 1820 Franklin County Tennessee Census, he had 3 boys and 3 girls still in his household. His son Joseph's family is there too, with 3 boys and 1 girl in his household.
