Notes for Nathaniel Bosworth:

Nathaniel and his wife lived in Hull, Mass., but on May 1, 1682, they bought land in Bristol, RI, and on Sept. 29 of the same year, they sold their home in Hull. In 1683, Nathaniel Bosworth built his home "Silver Creek" which is still standing, and is the oldest house in Bristol, RI. Pictures show "Silver Creek" to be a beautiful Colonial house, in a lovely setting. A view of the parlor shows a magnificent room, with family portraits and appropriate antique furniture. "During the bombardment of Bristol by General Wallace in 1775, grape shot pierced its walls and lodged in the ceilings, where it was found years later when repairs were being made." [Source: Bosworth Genealogy] The first religious worship in Bristol was held in this house. The first school in Bristol was also held in "Silver Creek," and the teacher was Nathaniel Bosworth's daughter, Mary.

Deacon Nathaniel Bosworth was one of the 8 men who founded the First Congregational Church of Bristol. Date of Birth: The Great Migration series gives Nathaniel's birth date as "about 1619;" The Bosworth Genealogy gives a date (without explanation) of September 14, 1617. Nathaniel's grave marker gives his age as 73, resulting in a birth year of 1617.

Identity of Wife: There seems to be general agreement among researchers that Bridget Bosworth was the wife or daughter of Jeremiah Bellamy of Hull.[1] Researcher Smith postulates that Nathaniel was Bridget's third husband, with prior marriages to (1) Jeremiah Bellamy and (2) Nicholas Lobdell.[2]

Number of Children: NEHGR's "Seventeenth Century Hull" article lists Nathaniel's nine children, beginning with Nathaniel Jr.[2] The Bosworth Genealogy adds a tenth child, an oldest "daughter" who is unnamed but married to John Lobdell in 1664/5.[1] It's likely this was a confusion with Nathaniel's niece, Benjamin's daughter Mary.[2]

Biography

Nathaniel Bosworth immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Nathaniel was born about 1617 in England. He was the son of Edward and Mary (birth surname unknown) Bosworth who emigrated to Boston on the Elizabeth and Dorcas in 1634 with his siblings Benjamin and Mary. Edward Bosworth died on the ship in Boston Harbor, resulting in great hardship for his family. Widow Mary Bosworth and the children were awarded financial assistance from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. However, Edward's sons Jonathan (who preceded them,) Benjamin and Nathaniel were made liable for Edward's debt to Henry Sewall, a fellow passenger on the journey. [3]

The Bosworth brothers were among the earliest settlers of Hingham.[4] In May of 1642 Nathaniel was granted admittance as a planter in the new fishing settlement at Nantasket (Hull.)[5] Nathaniel married and raised a large family there and was mentioned many times in town records.[2]

Family

Nathaniel's wife was Bridget (birth surname unknown.) The marriage date and location are unknown. The couple had nine known children:[2]

Nathaniel Jr. bp. 29 Jul 1649; m. (1) Elizabeth Morton, (2) Mary Morton
Jeremiah bp. 29 Jul 1649 unmarried
Hannah bp 30 Apr 1650; m. Joseph Jacobs
Joseph bp. 6 Jun 1652; m. Mrs. Elizabeth (Dorby) Miller
Bellamy 30 Nov 1654 m. Mary Smith
John b. ca 1656; m. Sarah Unknown
Mary bp. 4 Oct 1657; died unmarried
Edward bp. 29 May 1659; m. (1) Mary/Merry Unknown, (2) Elizabeth Unknown
Bridget bp. 19 Aug 1660 m. Joseph Philips
Bristol

Nathaniel and three of his sons were among the founding settlers of Bristol, now Rhode Island. He attended the Town's first meeting on September 1, 1682.[6] The first religious services were held in "Deacon" Nathaniel's Bosworth's home at 814 Hope Street which is still standing. He remained a prominent member of the community until his death.

Death and Estate

Nathaniel Bosworth died at Bristol on August 31, 1690.[7] His will, dated March 16, 1689/90, gave land to all six sons. Daughters Hannah Jacobs, Mary Bosworth, and Bridget were named, and bequests were given to Mary, Sarah, John, and Nathaniel Lobdell without specifying the relationships.[8][9] His Burial Marker is located on the grounds of the Congregational Church Nathaniel helped found.
