SARAH2 STANCLIFT (James1)
Daughter of James and Mary [Tinker] Waller Stanclift born East Middletown, Hartford County, CT Dec. 8, 1695 baptized Dec. 9, 1694, died after Oct. 4, 1759 when she was mentioned in husband's will. One of the dates was entered into the records incorrectly. She appeared in the Middletown Church record on Apr. 28, 1712 as "owning the Covenant"(1) at that date. She married NATHANIEL CHADWICK(2) son of Thomas and Sarah [Wolcott] Chadwick of Watertown, MA and Lyme, CT(3). Nathaniel died in Lyme, CT where his will written Oct. 4, 1759, was proved Nov. 2, 1759(4). He left Sarah 1/2 of his land and all of his moveable Estate, he left land in Lyme to son John, mentions daughters Sarah, widow of Hezekiah Smith, Martha widow of James Chadwick, Elizabeth wife of Benjamin Tinker indicating that upon the death of their mother, his moveable Estate is to be divided among them. He left a sum of money to sons Elijah and Elisha. Witnesses were Benjamin Rowland, Uriah Rowland and Joseph Wade(5).
The ancestors of Nathaniel Chadwick had probably come from Rochdale, Lancashire, England only 20 miles from the Stancliffs in the Shibden Valley of Halifax, North Yorkshire. Oliver Heywood, the noted nonconformist minister stated often in his diaries that he visited the Chadwick homestead in Rochdale, which suggests that like the Stancliffs, the Chadwicks were sympathetic to the Nonconformist cause.
3. .THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST Vol. 31 No. 2, page 65. THE BROTHERS THOMAS AND JOHN CHADWICK OF WATERTOWN, MA by Janice Boyd and George E. McCraken. The authors cite the origin of the Chadwick family in Rochedale, Lancashire England, which is about 20 miles from the Stanclift home in Halifax, Yorkshire. Nathaniel's Chadwick's sister, Lydia, married Samuel Tillotson of Lyme and the Tillotson family came from Sowerby Bridge, less than five miles from Halifax.
5. .Joseph Wade was married to Esther Chadwick, daughter of Nathaniel's brother Daniel and his wife Jerusha [Smith] Chadwick. TAG Vol.31 No.2 p.70
