Nathaniel Dike

Born October 25, 1667, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, died 1746 in Dudley, Massachusetts.

Married (1) Hannah Thomson, who died before 1716. Married (2) Mary Thomson, daughter of David Thomson, of Ipswich.

Nathaniel Dike was a soldier in the Expedition to Canada under Sir William Phipps in 1690, his name appearing twice on the list. He went with others from Sudbury and adjacent towns, and they were given 30 grants of land for their service His land was in Bethel, Maine, for his name is on the list of petitioners for the township of Bethel in 1737. These grants were taken up again in 1768, and in the History of Bethel, Maine, in a list of names is the following: "Nathaniel Dike in his own right, claimed by Palmer Golding." From this it would appear that he had disposed of his right. He was in Ipswich in 1700, was one of the persons owning the cove- nant, and had a seat in the church. He removed to Sutton, Massachusetts, in 1720, buying a tract of 136 acres. His last years were spent with his children in Dudley, Massachu- setts. In 1734 he deeded the Sutton homestead to his son Daniel. His will is dated May 2, 1746, and was probated in August, 1746. His son Ebenezer is named executor. It mentions his sons Daniel, Benjamin, and James, and his daughters Hannah, Martha, Sarah, and Mary. Ebenezer Dike, son of the first wife, went to Vermont. James Dike, son of the second wife, went to Thompson, Connecticut. In 1723 Nathaniel Dike was elected one of a committee "to seat the meeting house and for regulating thereof during the town's pleasure." He was also elected on a committee to manage the petition to the General Court in regard to the annexation of certain farms that lay to the west- ward of the Town of Sutton. He was also on a committee to procure a new county. Nathaniel Dike was seated in "ye fore seet" in the church (eight in a seat.) His son, Nathaniel, junior, was seated in the fourth seat (six in a seat). Such hard seats they were! On March 1731/2, he Was chosen grand juryman, "to sarve ye court of Worcester for this present year." He was also on a committee to call several men to account for taking money out of the town treasury without an order from the town in 1731/2.
