Teacher, 1815, at Charlotte Hall School in Maryland. Attorney in Cornish NH, circa 1819-1825. Schoolmaster (1825-1831) at the Hancock School in Boston. Subsequently, kept a journal during the voyage of the US Frigate Potomac, sent to the South Seas to punish pirates at Kuala Batu (now Aceh, Indonesia) who in 1831 had looted a trading ship (the Friendship) from Salem MA and killed most of its crew. Died May 1832 of consumption during the voyage (age 42) and was buried at sea, leaving a widow and 7 children. His journal was used by Jeremiah N. Reynolds, his successor as secretary to Commodore John Downes, as the basis of Reynolds' account of the voyage, which later became known as the "First Sumatran Expedition" (see Wikipedia article).
