Nathaniel Matson was a shipwright. His first wife, Ruth, died within two years of the marriage. She was from a wealthy family and from Watertown. There is no record of a child but Nathaniel names Thomas Matson in his will and Thomas Matson was not the child of Nathaniel's second marriage. The Thomas Matson was likely a brother or his cousin.
New England Marriages Before 1700, p. 496 has one entry for a Nathaniel Matson, birth year unknown, death year as 1686. A marriage is shown to a woman whose first name was not known but whose maiden name is Thomas. Thomas Matson was buried in the Duck River cemetery in Lyme.
