Nathaniel Mason Speer

Nathan M. Speer enlisted 01/14/1864 Cedar Glades, Montgomery County, Arkansas, mustered in 02/17/1864 Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Union Army description at enlistment age 21 born Montgomery, Alabama, 5'8", blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, Farmer. He went by his middle name "Mason". Named after his maternal grandfather Nathaniel Mason. Age 21 years old Apparently during military service on duty 24 hrs a day, heavy daily cold rains he become very sick developed chronic diarrhea and pneumonia leading to what appears to be stroke based on the illness description in pension papers, evidently lost use of his left arm. He spent several weeks in an army hospital in Little Rock before being release for duty.
