Nathaniel was the 4th of 7 children (4 sons and 3 daughters) born of John Wheatley and his wife Submit Peck Cooke (1722-1806). Nathaniel's siblings were: Mary (1743-1778, John (1748- 1776), Andrew (1750-1836), Lucinda (1755-1839), Lyndia (1758-1837) and Luther (1760-1777). H moved with his father and some of the other members of his family to Lebanon, Grafton County, New Hampshire in 1763.

On June 27, 1777, Nathaniel entered, as a Sergeant, Colonel Jonathan Chase's Regiment of New Hampshire Militia then Commanded by Major Francis Smith and marched from Cornish and Towns adjacent to reinforce the Garrison at Ticonderoga on the alarms of June 27th and July 4th 1777. He was discharged from this service on July 11th after serving 15 days and traveling 107 miles.

On September 22, 1777, Nathaniel entered, as a Private, Colonel Jonathan Chase's Regiment of New Hampshire Militia which marched from Cornish and joined the Continental Army under General Gates near Saratoga. He was discharged from this service after serving 1 month and 2 days and traveling 125 miles. At a Court held at Concord, New Hampshire, June 14,1786, Nathaniel was nominated Major of the 24th Regiment. He received the appointment, June 5, 1787.

Nathaniel married, January 18, 1776, at Lebanon, Grafton County, New Hampshire, Vinal Bliss (1758-1811) by whom he had 10 children (5 sons and 5 daughters): Lucy (1777-1779), Submit (1779-1847), John (1781-1847), Luther (1783-1859), Nathaniel (1786-1856), Lucy (1788-1833), Eunice (1790-1861), Vinal (b. 1792), Andrew (1795-1829), and Jesse Cook (1801-1878). After his first wife died, February 12, 1811, Nathaniel married, November 12, 1812, at Brookfield, Orange County Vermont, Betsey Bailey (1761-1827). There was no issue from this 2nd marriage.

Nathaniel came to Brookfield in 1791, and at once took a prominent part in public affairs. He was the Town's Representative to the Vermont General Assembly in 1801 and 1809. He became a large land owner, and was remarkably successful in agricultural pursuits. He died in Brookfield after suffering several years with kidney disease.
