Claire Chennault attended LSU for three years, but transferred to Louisiana State Normal for his senior year so he would be eligible for a teaching job. That same year, he attended a high school graduation ceremony in Winnsboro, and there met a young lady named Nell Thompson. They courted for a year, and married on Christmas Eve, 1911.

Mrs. Chennault married her late husband, Major Gen. Claire Lee Chennault, in Winnsboro, LA on December 24, 1911. She was also preceded in death by one son, Charles Lee Chennault.

She was survived by five sons, Col. John Stephen Chennault of North Hollywood, CA, Max Thompson Chennault of College Point, GA, Col. Claire Patterson Chennault of Ferriday, David Wallace Chennault of Monroe and Robert Kenneth Chennault of Lake St. John; two daughters, Peggy Sue Lee of North Hollywood, CA and Rosemary Louise Simrall of West Monroe; 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
