Nelle Rives Cheek was the daughter of William Brooks Cheek (son of Wincie/Winnie Ann Smith and Noah Cheek, both of Chatham County, NC) and Rena Rives (daughter of Sarah Norfleet Bynum and David Edward Rives, both of Chatham County).
Nelle graduated from Meredith College (Raleigh, NC) and UNC-Chapel Hill (NC) and taught music for 37 years.
Nelle married Francis V. Zappa (also a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, degree in science) on 03/14/1931 in Guilford County, NC. They had one child - Ann Rives Zappa (b.11/20/1931), who was an English professor at Kansas State University.
In 1952, Ann Rives Zappa remarried and had two children from that marriage..
