Polk was president (1845-1849) and some 2,800 Indiana volunteers rendezvoused at an Ohio River camp en route to joining General Zachary Taylor in the war on Mexico (June and July 1846). Neta Goss would have been about 28 years old then and still single. Her family’s Clark County farm was 15 to 20 miles north-west of the camp.
