Nic Karvelas (1963 - 2007)
Brief overview:
Nic (44), a school principal of Little Sparrows School in Randhart, and human rights activist, was shot at close range, outside his home in Redruth, Alberton, on 12th June 2007, by four armed males His domestic worker, Elizabeth Mokoena, was tied up and beaten.
Suspect Mlungisi Tshabalala, was linked to the shooting after admitting he sold a cellphone taken from the scene of the robbery, which he then sold.

- On 1st September 2010, Judge Satchwell sentenced Tshabalala to 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 23 years for murder, and ordered that the sentences run concurrently, resulting in Tshabalala spending an effective 23 years in prison. He has also been granted leave to appeal. The other three men are still at large.
