From wikipedia about Rotherfield:

There are written records of Rotherfield in the 8th century; it was also included in the Domesday Book and in various other medieval documents. In Tudor times three of the inhabitants were burned at the stake for their religious beliefs. (This would be probably the reign of Mary c. 1558)

In the 18th century, the road through the village became part of the Turnpike Trust road between Tunbridge Wells and Lewes. Until 1880, when a new ecclesiastical parish was formed, Crowborough was also part of the parish; in 1905 the latter also became a civil parish in its own right. Rotherfield was originally a Saxon settlement in an area generally covered with oak forest. The church stands at the top of a hill, and was then surrounded by cleared land. The areas nearest to the valley bottoms, where water was available, were farmed. Rotherfield became a royal hunting estate in the times of Kings Alfred the Great, Athelstan and William Rufus.

NICHOLAS CATT SR. (1545–1598) was born October 6, 1545 in Rotherfield, Sussex, England. Husband of Christobel Allchorne, married October 12, 1578 in Rotherfield. “Nicholas Catt was baptised on 6 October 1545 in Rotherfield. He was the son of George Catt (c1520-1590) and Eglantyne (c1520-1593). He died in 1598 and left a will, in which he was described as Nicholas Catt, senior. In his will he mentioned his children Mary, Thomas, George and William, wife Christabel, Anthony Hosmer his man, Robte Turner and Mary Man??ante. He may have been named after an uncle, as a Nicholas Catt married Lettice Hosmer on 14 July 1549 in Rotherfield. Nicholas most probably occupied Catts Farm in Rotherfield.” (from Wikitree)

Nycolas (Nicholas) Catt was christened at St Denys Parish, Rotherfield, Sussex, England on 6 October 1545. The spelling of his name - Nycolas - appears on the church records. It changed to Nicholas in subsequent documents. He occupied the land known as Catt's Farm and still occupied the land when he married Christobel Allchorne on 12 October 1549 at St Denys in Rotherfield.

Nicholas died after 18 April 1598, the date on his Will, and before 3 April 1598 when probate was granted, in Rotherfield, Sussex, England. In his will he was described as yeoman of Rotherfield. He mentioned his children, his wife Christobel, Anthony Hosmer his man, Robert Turner servant and Mary Marchant. "His Man", Anthony Hosmer, was the person who managed the properties. He also managed to win over the widow Christobel and married her soon after Nicholas had died, on 23 September 1598.

Nicholas and Christobel had six children -

Nicholas - 1579; Henry - 1581; Mary - 1582; Thomas - 1585; George - 1588; William - 1594.
