"The name Kakiat [not Kakeath] is derived from a grant of land made in 1696 by Governor Benjamin Fletcher, in the name of King William III, to Daniel Honan and Michael Hawdon. The grant included the land from Sloatsburg to Monsey and Pomona. The Minsi Indians called it Kackyachtaweke. This region, once known as Kakiat, was later named New Hempstead by settlers from Long Island. Eventually it became the Town of Ramapo." Harriman Trails, by William J. Myles, 1991.

It's in southern Rockland Co. I have no idea where the church might have been.

  • **************************************************************** From Rootsweb Conklin list, August 2005: Conklin/Cancklie of Westchester County, New York, first documented generation Parents: UNKNOWN (referred to as [?"John Concklin of Flushing and Rye"] and [?Helena/Magdalena].

Generation numbers are marked with an asteric to distinguish them from the line of John Conklin (1) of Southold and Huntington, New York. DNA testing in 2001 has determined that this line is NOT a biological match with the male descendants of John Conklin (1) of Southold and Huntington and his brother or cousin, Ananias Conklin of East Hampton. Conklin Mann in his The American Genealogist articles also speculated on a son, Edmund, to explain the existence of Tobias Conklin. No documentation for Edmund has been found.

The family is referred to by Conklin (Concklin) variants in "English" town, court, and deed records and by Canckley (Cantly) variants in the Dutch Reform Church records. The actual surname of their father is unknown. It is my opinion that it is unlikely to be Conklin. The English Conklins have numerous variant spellings to the name but CONKLIN is the standardized form and is recognized by the Library of Congress to facilitate ease of searching.
