Notes for Nicholas Hays: Lost state of Franklin - part of TN; Francis Hughes; James; Robert; Nicholas & Nathaniel Hayes - Dec 1787. Nicholas Hays came to America from Ireland in August, 1746.He was "assigned" to William Scott of Philadelphia for the "consideration of his customary dues".Mr Scott was a tailor and, presumably, Nicholas was assigned to work as an apprentice to him for a period of four years - this in return for the 18 lbs paid to the person who finacned Nicholas Hays' passage to America.

Nicholas had crossed the Atlantic on the snow CHESTER. A snow was a small sailing vessel resembling a brig.It formerly was used as a war ship. Many people were brought to Philadelphia on this small ship CHESTER and assigned to work a number of years for their passage to America. In 1758 Nicholas Hays was on the Muster Roll of Bedford county, Va.Evidently he served during the French and Indian War. From the deeds filed in Green County, TN, it appears that Nicholas owned a sizeable tract of land, yet he lived on a 30 acre farm. He may well have been a tailor or weaver by trade, as well as a farmer. His inventory included yards of hand-loomed cloth.
