About Nicholas Norman Frost

NICHOLAS NORMAN FROST "NICK" 1922 - 2004 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving father and grandfather Nick on April 13, 2004 at Fred Douglas Lodge, with his family at this side. Nick was born on December 20, 1922 in Winnipeg. He grew up and was educated in the North End - the area of the city he called home all his life. Nick joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943 as a Private in the 49th Loyal Edmonton Regiment and proudly served overseas in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean Area and Continental Europe. He was decorated with the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, 1939 - 1945 Star, France-Germany Star, Italy Star and War Medal 1939 - 1945. Following the war, Nick drove a taxi and also worked at the Winnipeg Arena where he enjoyed watching the various sports events. He was employed at the Canadian Pacific Railway for 40 years as a fireman and engineer, until his retirement in 1987. Nick married Antonia (Toni) Deda in 1952 and they were blessed with two daughters and later, five grandchildren. Nick was a loving, caring and devoted father and grandfather and had a great sense of humour. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing, gardening, taking trips to Winnipeg Beach and Ukrainian Park and playing Rummoli with family and friends. Watching baseball, football and hockey on television was another favourite pastime of Nicks. He was an animal lover who enjoyed the companionship of his dogs Sparky and Pika and his cat of 22 years, Pudgy. Nick was a lifelong and active member of Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. He enjoyed his work and association with the Mens Club and the Seniors Club there. He was also a loyal, dedicated and active lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 141. He proudly served as a member of the Colour Party for many years and enjoyed spending time with his comrades, often reminiscing about the war. Nick will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his two daughters and their husbands, Marlene and Rick Britton of Morden and Cynthia and Randy Dodson of Winnipeg; five grandchildren, Melissa, Warren, Lindsay, Dorian and Olivia; nieces, nephews and friends. Although he is gone, his strength of heart and love will be with us always. He was predeceased by his loving wife Antonia, with whom he shared 38 years of marriage; his parents, Tekla and Peter; his sisters, Florence and Pauline; and his brothers, Peter, Joseph and Anthony. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in Dads care during his extended illness, including Peter Moroz, numerous Home Care workers and Gloria at Veterans Affairs Canada. Heartfelt thanks is also extended to the excellent nurses, doctors and health care professionals at Fred Douglas Lodge (Evergreen Walk) - his home for the last two years, for their exceptional loving care. Our deepest appreciation and gratitude is extended to Dr. Mazowita and Dr. Hahlweg and nurses Brenda and Alex for their compassionate care and to Lori-Anne, Joanne, Lynne and Sister Michailassj for consoling the family by offering prayers and making Dads final hours comfortable and peaceful. Thank you all for allowing Pudgy to keep Dad company this past year. Your dedication, kindness and thoughtfulness are greatly appreciated and will always be remembered. Prayers will be said on Friday April 16, at 7:00 p.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the church on Saturday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. with Msgr. Gregory Oucharyk officiating. Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery following the reception at the church. Active pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Randy Dodson and Rick Britton; grandsons, Dorian Dodson and Warren Britton; nephew Larry Humeny; and family friend Matthew Sarbit. Nicks comrades from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 141 will serve as honorary pallbearers. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to express their sympathy may donate in Nicks memory to The Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6 or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3. God saw he was getting weary He did what He thought best He put his arms around him And whispered "Come to rest".
