About Sir Nicholas Poyntz, 4th Lord Poyntz
Biography
From “Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage: Volume 10: Poyntz (Poynes)” < link > Volume 10, page 676:
- He [Nicholas Poyntz] m., 1stly, before 13 Oct. 1333, when about 13, Eleanor (-);(i) and, 2ndly, before 20 Jan. 1367/8, Eve DE STOKES.(j) He d., before Michaelmas term 1376,(k) when, according to modern doctrine, his Barony fell into abeyance between his two daughters and coheirs.
- (i) Cal. Patent Rolls, 1330-34, p. 472. Said to be da. of Sir John Erleigh (Dugdale, Baronage, vol. ii, p. 2).
- (j) Wrottesley, Pedigrees from the Plea Rolls, p. 209.
- (k) When his two daughters and coheirs, Avice, wife of John Barre, and Margaret, wife of John de Newburgh, initiated proceedings at law which extended for over 30 years (Idem, pp. 129, 209, 275, 283, 317).
Dugdale's identification of the first wife Eleanor of Nicholas Poyntz, quoted in note (i), is confirmed by a 15th-century inquisition (evidently the same inquisition post mortem of Sir John Tiptot, C 139/110/45, cited in note (b)), which is quoted by Thomas Gerard in The Particular Description of the County of Somerset (1633) [Somerset Record Society 15, p. 150 (1900)]. But there is no evidence that Nicholas had a second wife Eve. Although Wrottesley does describe her as his wife, she is not described as such in the plea roll of Michaelmas Term 1398 that he cites [KB 27/550, mm. 35-36d; see images at AALT: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 and 11 ]. The entry refers to a final concord made in November 1359 but not recorded until January 1369 [CP 25/1/50/45; see image at AALT], which also mentions Nicholas and Eve but does not describe her as his wife. A plea roll of Hilary Term 1361 [CP 40/405, m. 189; see image at AALT] also mentions Nicholas and Eve, again not described as man and wife, and records orders for them to be distrained separately. Nicholas died between Hilary Term 1363 [CP 40/412, m. 61d; see image at AALT] and Easter Term 1371, and left a widow named Eleanor who was still living in Hilary Term 1374 [CP 40/442, m. 38, and CP 40/453, m. 328; see images at AALT: 1 and 2 ].
