About Nicolas Pinel

"Pinel from Quebec
There is an important line of Pinel in Canada, this branch originates from Normandy.
Their ancestor, Nicolas Pinel (c1602-1655) was born in Campagnolles (Calvados), son of Jean Pinel and Thomasse de la Haye.
In 1630 he married Madeleine Maraud in La Rochelle, with whom he had 5 children: Antoine (1631 -?), Gilles (1635-1700), Pierre (1635-?), Pierre (1636-1707) and Isaac.
In 1645, he signed up in La Rochelle to work for three years in Port-Royal (in Acadia) as a pit sawyer and carpenter.
At the end of his contract, he settled near Quebec where he brought his wife and children.
In 1650, Nicolas Pinel was a farmer in Sillery on the land of Anne Gasnier, widow of Jean Clément de Vaux, lord of Monceaux.
In 1651, he received a concession near the Cap Rouge river. Then he acquired new land in Sillery in the shelter of Fort Saint-François-Xavier but returned to Cap-Rouge in 1653, despite the dangerous neighborhood of the Iroquois Indians hostile to the settlers.
He died in Quebec on September 18, 1655, following an arquebus wound received during an Iroquois attack at Cap-Rouge.
Gilles Pinel will continue the farm with his mother before starting his family and with his numerous children becoming the founder of the numerous Pinel descendants of Quebec.
His son François-Xavier Pinel known as La France was the first to bear the nickname which would give rise to the Lafrance lineage."

“Nicolas was a master carpenter and "long sawyer" (cuts timber into long planks).
Nicolas married Madeleine Maraud on September 29, 1630 at Sainte-Marguerite in La Rochelle.
They had at least four sons:
Antoine and his twin, Pierre, were baptized on September 7, 1631. They both died young.
Gilles was baptized on February 28, 1635.
Pierre was baptized on October 12, 1636.
On January 12, 1641, Nicolas bought a small house in La Rochelle from Danial Gombault.
On April 5, 1645, Nicolas signed a three-year service contract in La Rochelle to work for Charles de Menou d'Aulnay in Port Royal, Acadia. He left shortly after and returned to France at the end of his contract.
In 1650, Nicolas arrived in New France with his wife and sons, Gilles and Pierre. They lived in Sillery.
On April 27, 1651, Nicolas and Gilles were clearing part of their land when two Iroquois approached them. A neighbor, named Boisverdun, shot at the natives but missed. Nicolas and his son ran down a hill to a neighbor's house. The two Iroquois shot at the door of the house wounding Nicolas in the process.
On January 23, 1652, he received a land grant from the Jesuits in another part of Sillery. He decided to stay on his original land after seigneur Louis de Lauzon assured his safety.
Nicolas died and was buried on September 18, 1655 in Quebec City. His burial record states that his death was due to wounds from an arquebus. It is not known if this was recent or due to his previous wounds.”

Nicolas PINEL died in 1655.

He died in hospital of an arquebois wound. On 27 April 1651, at about 7:00 at night , Nicolas Pinel and his son, Gilles, were attacked in their home by two Iroquois who thought they could take them alive.

Boisverdun shot without injuring them. Master Nicolas and his son ran for their lives down hill. The Iroquois were joined by others around the house of Nopce. They fired a round of arquebuse at the door of the house.

At night the dogs never ceased barking at the cote de Ste-Genevieve.
