Nicolas 'Nic' Verwey (1974 - 2022)
Brief overview:
Nicolas (48), a part-time security guard, was caught in the crossfire during farm riots in Kirkwood in the Easter Cape on 25th April 2022. He had been deployed, along with another security guard, to one of the farms, when an angry mob dragged Nicolas out of his vehicle.
The rioters stabbed Nicolas with sharpened sticks, severely beating and stoning him and stomping on his head. The mob then set fire to the vehicle. Nicolas was transferred to the Livingstone Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay where he spent the following 9 weeks. After having two brain surgeries in one week, he passed away on 16th June 2022.
