“Farm Murders” 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023

27/11/2022: TLU South Africa statistics indicate that 2,204 people have been killed on farms since 1990. In 2002, a total of 119 people were killed on farms, of whom 82 were farmers. This is the most murders recorded in one year during this 32-year period. *https://archive.is/SPDDM

28/02/2023: AfriForum launched its latest report on farm attacks and murders. Out of all the farm murders reported last year, suspects were arrested in only 33% of the incidents. However, it is unclear how many were charged and ultimately convicted. This is a drastic decrease from the 47% that AfriForum found in 2020 to be arrested after a farm murder. The number of arrests last year stems from a total of 333 confirmed farm attacks and 50 farm murders that took place in 2022. According to the report, the number of farm attacks decreased in the past year compared to the 415 attacks and 55 murders in 2021. Similar to previous years, almost 40% of all murder victims were the farmer and owner of the farm between the ages of 50 and 79. Just like in 2021, almost two-thirds of all victims were men. *https://archive.is/sieNd

22/05/2023: 77 farm attacks and nine murders were reported nationwide between January and March 2023. Most attacks took place in Gauteng (19), followed by the North West (10), KwaZulu-Natal (10) and the Western Cape (9). All farm attack victims and farm murder victims are over 60, although the age of victims is known in only 36% of cases. 67% of the murder victims were over 60 years old. A total of 67% of farm murder victims were men and 33% were women. In 56% of all farm murders, the victim was shot dead, three murder victims were shot dead by way of execution in two separate incidents. In two cases, victims were stabbed to death, in another incident a 69-year-old man was attacked and stabbed to death next to his wife, only a few meters from where his daughter was murdered 11 years ago on the same smallholding. Another victim was strangled. There is usually more than one perpetrator present during the attack and that most attacks take place at night. 48% took place over a weekend (including Fridays), followed by Thursdays (17%). *https://archive.is/Zgv2r
