About Nicolaus von Woweren
Legal advisor to St. Nicolai Church 1577 St. Nicolai Church 4
Nicolaus von Wowern, a Catholic, fled Antwep, Belgium in 1560 due to some religious persecutions, there he converted over to the Lutheran religion to the great consternation of his parents who therefore disinherited him.
He became a businessman in Hamburg and married Sophia von Wintam in 1562. In 1583 he bought some shops on Spitalerstrasse, which were made into army buildings. 1606, the town of Hamburg took over these buildings for 300,00 Marks and built a new establishment in Eppendorf on Schedestrasse on the corner of Torpenbeckstrasse. In 1577, he became legal advisor to St. Nicolai Church.
Before the 2nd of March 1600, his property was willed to his widow and heirs; he had stepped down from his office of legal advisor shortly before he died.
