About Nikau Sonny Popo
A man convicted for "wicked crimes" including the rape and murder of a woman and the manslaughter of her baby son has been denied release from prison. Parole has again been declined for Edward Albert McElroy, 24 years after he was jailed as a teenager. He first became eligible for release in June 2002. In 1993, McElroy was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 19-year-old Fresha Wharepapa at her Inglewood home in Taranaki. McElroy, then 18, and Wharepapa played video games together on June 19, 1992, before she went to bed. After she went to sleep, he followed the woman into the bedroom and strangled her unconscious. He sexually assaulted her, strangled her again and then struck her in the head with a weapon. Before he left the house, he set it alight. At the time Wharepapa's baby son, Nikau Sonny Popo, was asleep in another room. A coroner's report later ruled the infant died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning from the smoke and gases caused by the blaze.
