Nikolaas "Niko" Steenkamp (1963 - 2022)
Brief overview:
Niko (59), a farmer from Maroelasfontein farm, in Northam, in Limpopo, was found murdered, with his hands and feet tied with cable ties, and hidden under branches on 6th September 2022 around 14h30.
Nikolaas was last seen with an employee fixing a pump the day prior. He left the worker there around 10h00, and was found the following day by other employees.
On Wednesday 7th, four of Steenekamp's workers, three men and one woman, were found in possession of stolen property, including a laptop, and a mobile phone, and were arrested. Members of Visible Policing, Rural Safety Partners in Policing, Fire and Rescue in Policing and Detectives from the District were all involved and followed leads and four workers were arrested.
A fifth suspect, a foreigner, was apprehended in the North West last night on the night of the 8th. Police spokesperson, Lt. Col. Malesela Ledwaba, said detectives from Northam and Mogwase apprehended the suspect in a rented room in Holfontein. The detectives also came across stolen jewellery, as well as the safe stolen from Steenkamp's farmhouse.
The five suspects are expected to appear in Northam magistrate court soon facing charges of murder and house robbery.
