About Nils Jöransson

Nils Jöransson (also known as Cornelius Urinson) and his wife Elinor. Nils had arrived in New Sweden as a soldier on the Eagle in 1654

Cornelius "Nils" Urinson arrived in New Sweden as a soldier on the "Orn" (Eagle) in 1654. He owned part of Harmon's Mount-1675, which was sold to William Ward.

His wife was Elinor Unknown. They had a daughter, first name unknown, who married Anders Pölson, youngest son of Pol Jönsson (Mullica) and Margaret Andersdotter. Pol Jönsson (Mullica) also arrived in New Sweden on the "Orn" (Eagle) in 1654, as a freeman, with wife and family. Based on names of some of the descendents, the daughter's name could have been Sara (or NOT!! --needs more research!!)

In 1678, Andrew Poulson petitioned Governor Andros in New York for land on the Delaware, claiming that he had received a warrant for land at Appoquinimink Creek in New Castle County, which had been surveyed for him, but that when the Dutch retook the Delaware in 1673-1674, he had been taken as a spy, imprisoned and lost his land. He claimed to be poor with a large family.

Land in Cecil County:

Deed. Cornelius Urimson and Ellinor Urimson of Cecil Co., to William Ward of the same place, 50 acres of land, part of a tract called Mt Harmon by the Sassafras River formerly sold to Neales Urimson by Godfrey Harmer. Ackn: 22 Mar 1675/6 before Augustin Herman and Henry Ward by William Galloway and Andrew Powlson, attorneys for Cornelius Urimson and Elinor Urimson.

Power of Attorney. Elinor Urimson appoints her son Andrew Powlson to be her attorney to acknowledge and deliver to William Ward the land she now lives on. Made 23 Mar 1675/6. Wit: Axel Still, John ___. wit may be John Wheeler, Axel Stille's partner

[both p. 5, Abstracts of Cecil County Land Records 1673-1751, by June D Brown]

The 1676 deed above identifies Andrew Powlson as the son-in-law of Nils Joransson and his wife Elinor.

Cornelius "Nils" Urinson and Elinor may also have had a son John. There is a John Urinson, whose name appears on the 1661 Maryland Denizations, just below Cornelis Urinson's name. Is he a son? See MSA Vol. 3, P. 430, "Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1660-1661" in which a list of persons are granted Denization in Maryland. This is a group of persons who lived previously in New Sweden or in the Dutch colonies on the Delaware, now living in Maryland. These names include: Axell Stille, Peter Jacobson, Marcus Sipherson, Clement Micheelson, Hendrick Hendrickson, Andrew Clementson, Peter Montson, Mathias Cornelison, Hendrick Mathiason, John Wheeler, Bartholomew Hendrickson, Cornelius Urinson, John Urinson, Andrew Toreson, Paule Johnson, Gothofrid Harmer.

Is John Urinson the one called 'John Neales' in Edward Johnson's 1697 will? If he was a son of Cornelis (Nils) Urinson, his patronym could be 'Nilsson.'

Johnson, Edward, Cecil Co., 18 Oct 1697; 17 April 1698. To Thomas Hedghoke, "Paradise" and "Swamp." To Anthony, son of Jno. Cousen, and hrs., 200 A. (unnamed) on Elk R. To William Prise, Jr., Ellinor Minerdoe, Richard Cousen and his brother John Cousen, John Neales, Charles Crow, and Ann Hedgekoke, personalty. Owen Hewes, ex. and residuary legatee of estate, real and personal, including "Misfortune" on Back Ck. Test: Jno. Cousine, Peter Mainardoe, Joan Lovis, Eliza: Cousen.

Who is Elinor Mainardo in the above will?
