About Nils Nilsson Oravainen

  • When Oravainen had died in 1597 Lucia, with no last name, sent a letter to the Royal Castel's chamber with the notion that she wanted to know how much fortune Oravainen had left in Stockholm and Uppsala. But in the tax rolls from 1599 is a Botilla named "Nils Orivanz" widow. Also, in the Sámi village Tingevaara a woman named Inga lived, that was called "Oriwans Inga". All the goods that Inga had that belonged to "Nils Orauainen" was to be claimed as the Crown's goods. Apparently were Botilla and Inga Oravainen's Sámi mistresses according to Johan Nordlander. Oravainen spent time in Tingevaara since at letter dated 24 of November 1590 were to be sent to Oravainen that was in Tingevaara at the time, he might even have lived there occasionally (Johan Nordlander, Några av konungens fogdar under 1500-talet, Norrländska samlingar häftet 12 (III: 2), Stockholm 1933, s. 69-73). But note that Botilla is not a Sámi name, which leads us to believe that she was a Swedish mistress to Oravain, not Sámi. Oravainen's goods in Inga's hand was also taken from her sheds, which shows that Inga could have lived a quite stationary life in Tingevaara.
