About Nimrod Harmon
We believe this is the Nimrod Harmon listed in the 1790 census in Worcester County, Maryland. He does not appear in 1800 census, but it seems his wife, Sally, did. So Nimrod probably died between 1790 and 1800. We believe they had other children besides Nathan, but are not sure about any of them. In 1790, Nimrod was head of a household of 6 "other free people" and in 1800, Sally was head of a household of 5 "other free people." We think they had a son named Peter, because we have a note that Nathan's son Peter was named after his father's brother.
He may be the two year old mentioned in Accomack County, Virginia, court records, one of four sons of Jane Harman, who were bound as apprentice shoemakers to Hezekiah Purnoll on 25 April 1749, but we don't know for sure. Some say he and/or his wife Sally were Native Americans, but we don't know for sure. There's another family story that Nimrod came from England, but no one knows for sure which story may be true. We do know that Nathan Harmon's 1850 census record indicates that he was born in Maryland.
We don't know for sure that the above named court record refers to our ancestor, but the name and place seems to fit. Part of Accomack County, Virginia later became what is today Worcester County, Maryland. If it is the same person, a book we have a copy of states that the court record mentions these four boys, sons of Jane Harman, who were bound as apprentices to Hezekiel Purnoll: Elijah b. ca 1735, Harman b. ca 1738, Solomon b. ca 1743, and Nimrod b. ca 1747. He's about the right age, and it seems an unusual enough name, that we wonder, but we don't know enough to be certain.
