Nine Josephine “Jo” Kerr passed away Monday, June 9, 2008.
Born in Middlebury Township, Knox County, Nina entered this world June 7, 1916, as the seventh child of Nellie Josephine and Karr Loss Reed. Nina graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1935, and attended many of her class reunions, including her 50th in 1985. On June 12, 1938, she married Wilbur “Jim” Hyatt Kerr and shared almost 60 years working their various farms before he passed away Feb. 25, 1998. Nina will be remembered by family, friends and neighbors for her daily two-mile walks and her love of gardening and tending to her flower beds. She had a vegetable garden every summer until well into her eighties.
Over the years, she spent many hours at different hobbies and interests. Stripping, refinishing, and caning old chairs, refinishing old chests and a kitchen hutch, among other pieces. During the winter months, she would use the wool of old coats which friends donated, to make braided rugs, to place on their hardwood floors. In her later years, she attended the Church of Christ East Side. Until 2006, when she moved to western New York, she had been a lifelong resident of Knox County.
Nina was a devoted wife and mother who will be remembered lovingly by her son, Larry Kerr (Beverly Capobianco) of West Boxford, Massachusetts; a daughter, Sharon Terwilliger (Thomas) of Jamestown, New York; three grandchildren, Laura Peters (Kent), Todd Terwilliger (Kendall) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lisa Terwilliger of Chicago, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Colin Reed Peters and Tatum Rae Terwilliger; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Nina was preceded in death by five brothers, Howard, Cletus, J. Kenneth, Arnold and Chester Reed; two sisters, Leona Young and Thelma Calver. She was the last of her generation.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where friends may call one hour prior. Mr. Rick Tincher will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
Contributions in Nina’s memory may be made to the Knox County Humane Society, Church of Christ East Side, and Hospice of Knox County or Chautauqua County, New York.
