"Jane Roe" of 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Decision. In 1969, 21 year old Norma Leah McCorvey unsuccessfully sought a legal abortion in the state of Texas, lacking credible evidence of a threat to her health. She was referred to Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, attornies looking for clients to challenge the current law. After three years the case reached the U. S. Supreme Court. McCorvey's name was not revealed. She was represented as Jane Roe. The defendant was Dallas County D.A. Henry Wade. Thus, Roe v. Wade. The court's favorable decision, written by Justice Harry Blackmun, made abortion legal nationwide in the first trimester of pregnancy, on the basis of a woman's right to privacy.
