About Norman Frederic Ticehurst, M.B. F.R.C.S

Norman Frederic Ticehurst was born in Hastings, East Sussex in 1873. He was the eldest of 7 children. His father, Dr. Augustus Ticehurst, was a surgeon, as was his father Frederic.

Norman's son Richard was also a surgeon in Hastings and has day surgery wing of the Conquest hospital named after him.

He contributed a paper on Yellow Wagtails in the Hastings and east Sussex Naturalist in 1906. Publications include Kentish Birds 1909; contribution to "A Practical Handbook of British Birds" (1919-24); "Notes on Sussex ornithology.

In the ‘ British Medical Journal ’ (3 January 1970), he is described as “ an outstanding example of the General Practitioner Surgeon on whom the Provincial Hospitals of this country mainly depended up to the time of the National Health Service in 1947. . . . He was accurate in diagnosis, shrewd in judgement, and a first class operator ”.

His service with Royal East Sussex Hospital from 1904 to 1933, when he was due to retire, was extended to 1938, but the outbreak of the second world war saw him back at the Hospital again, when he was to witness the devastation and destruction of Hastings and St. Leonards from the frequent bombing attacks in which the whole area suffered.

He was also Medical Officer of the Normanhurst Military Hospital at Battle, for which services he was appointed to the O.B.E.
