About Obadiah Maxfield

OBADIAH2 MAXFIELD (David1) was born at Vermont say about 1776 (1775-85 in 1800 census, 1776-94 in 1820, 1760-70 in 1830, 1770-80 in 1840), a child of David Maxfield and his wife Judith Clough.

Obadiah Maxfield received land in Georgia, Vermont:

30 December 1797 - Obadiah Maxfield of Georgia purchased from his father David Maxfield of Georgia land in Georgia for $666.66 (Georgia Deeds 1:358).

25 April 1799 - Obadiah Maxfield purchased from Silas Hathaway, Esq., of Saint Albans, land in Georgia for $333.33 (Georgia Deeds 1:363).

Obadiah Maxfield married EUNICE (Michigana 29:118) probably before 1800. Eunice was born at Vermont about 1783 (Michigana 29:118; about 1778 in Carlson). In various records Obadiah's wife is also called "Lucy" and "Polly."

Obadiah Maxfield moved to Milton, Vermont, between 1802 and 1805, and sold his Georgia, Vermont land from 1802 to 1817:

26 March 1802 - Obadiah Maxfield of Georgia sold to his father David Maxfield of same, land for $600 (Georgia Deeds 2:435).

26 March 1802 - Obadiah Maxfield of Georgia sold to his parents David Maxfield and Judith Maxfield of same, land for $600 (Georgia Deeds 2:534-35).

19 October 1802 - Obadiah Maxfield of Georgia sold to Charles Rugg of Georgia, land for $133 (Georgia Deeds 2:497).

8 April 1805 - Obadiah Maxfield of Milton sold to Eliphalet Maxfield now of Colchester, 75 acres in Georgia, for $320 (Georgia Deeds 3:195).

18 October 1806 - Obadiah Maxfield of Milton sold to Levi Maxfield of Georgia, land in Georgia for $100; sworn 1 Apr 1807 (Georgia Deeds 3:280).

12 July 1811 - Obadiah Maxfield of Milton, sold to Seth Castle, land for $100 (Georgia Deeds 4:142).

25 July 1811 - Obadiah Maxfield of Milton sold to Seth Castle of Georgia, land for $ 20 "It being nevertheless understood by Seth Castle that Levi Maxfield will have a title to a part of said premisis after the expiration of the natural life of David Maxfield and Judith wife of said David" (Georgia Deeds 4:142-43).

21 January 1817 - Obadiah Maxfield of Milton sold to Cyrus A. Baker of Georgia, land in Georgia for $220 (Georgia Deeds 4:411).

Obadiah's age was overestimated in 1830, Eunice's age in 1840.

Sometime between 1840 and 1847 they moved to the Township of Lamont, Ottawa County, Michigan, where son Ira had settled in 1835.

Eunice Maxfield died at Lamont on 4 September 1847 (Carlson). Obadiah Maxfield died there on 25 May 1848. He was buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont (Maplewood Cem; Carlson).

According to Carlson, Obadiah and Eunice/Lucy Maxfield had nine children, five of whom Carlson could name. I have indicated the others below in the sequence indicated by the census records
