Army Lieutenant Colonel D. Octavio Villa Coss, son of the famous revolutionary general Pancho Villa, was shot dead by smugglers in Matamoros, a town located on the border with the United States. The murder is attributed to Juan Negrete Guerra, who led a gang of active smugglers who were mainly engaged in clandestinely exporting coffee to the Republic of the North. A short time ago, Lieutenant Colonel Villa had seized a large batch of coffee. The smugglers tried to bribe him, even offering him 250,000 pesos (1,200,000 pesetas) if he allowed them to continue their illegal traffic. But when Villa refused to agree and showed himself willing to proceed vigorously against them, they set him up in a local bar, where they riddled him with bullets. It is recalled that nearly forty years ago, Pancho Villa was shot to death when he returned from collecting the pension that the Government had granted in a bank.-J.E.C
