As First Lady, Navon established the Presidents Council for the Welfare of the Child. She worked with Jihan Sadat, wife of the Egyptian president, on rehabilitation projects for soldiers wounded in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Navon also pushed for an international treaty to protect children caught in war zones.[1]

Navon was the first Israeli-born presidential wife. With her Ashkenazi upbringing, her marriage to a Sephardi Jew was unusual at the time. The fact that they were parents of small children was another first for the presidency in Israel.[1]

Illness and death[edit] In 1979, Navon was diagnosed with breast cancer and rejected a mastectomy, opting for chemotherapy and a lumpectomy. Later she argued for the right of patients to determine their own treatment. In August 1993, Navon died of leukemia at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem at the age of 57.[1]

גן אופירה נבון בירושלים אופירה נבון (21 בינואר 1936 - 22 באוגוסט 1993; ה'תרצ"ו - ה'תשנ"ג) הייתה רעיית נשיא המדינה החמישי, יצחק נבון. פסיכולוגית במקצועה, ופעילת ציבור בנושאי חברה, חינוך ורווחה. נשיאת יוניצ"ף בישראל, וראש ארגון הגג של ארגוני הנכים בישראל.

בעקבות זכייה בתחרות יופי בינלאומית שנערכה בצרפת, שבה ייצגה את ישראל, קיבלה מלגה ללימודי פסיכולוגיה בארצות הברית. עם חזרתה לארץ, עבדה כפסיכולוגית שיקומית באיל"ן.

בשנת 1963 נישאה ליצחק נבון, ששימש כמזכירו של ראש הממשלה דוד בן-גוריון. לאחר מספר שנים בהן היו חשוכי ילדים, החליט הזוג נבון לפנות לשירות למען הילד בבקשה לאימוץ. לאחר כשנתיים וחצי של המתנה אושר להם לאמץ בת (נעמה), ומספר חודשים לאחר מכן הצליח הזוג להביא לעולם בן, לו קראו 'ארז', כשם נעוריה של אופירה.

אשת הנשיא[%D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%9B%D7%AA קוד מקור | עריכה] כשהתמנה יצחק נבון לנשיא בשנת 1978 הייתה נבון ילידת הארץ הראשונה שכיהנה כאשת הנשיא והחלה לעסוק בפעילויות ציבוריות שונות. היא הייתה פעילה בנושאי קידום מעמד הנשים, עשתה למען ילדים במצוקה ונרתמה לפעילות באגודות למען הילד. לאחר פרוץ מלחמת לבנון פגשה חיילים פצועים. נבון הקימה את "עצרת בית הנשיא לשלום הילד" וכן את קרן "אכפת לי", שיזמה פרויקטים בתחומי החינוך והרווחה. היא גם מילאה את תפקידי נשיאת יוניצ"ף בישראל וראש ארגון הגג של ארגוני הנכים בישראל. יחד עם נשות נשיאי מצרים וארצות הברית זכתה בתעודת הוקרה מיוחדת עבור פעילותה למען ילדים באזורים מוכי אסון.

קברה בחלקת גדולי האומה, הר הרצל, ירושלים. במהלך שנותיה במשכן הנשיא חלתה נבון בסרטן השד. התמודדותה האמיצה עם המחלה ותרומתה להעלאת המודעות לנושא הפכו אותה לסמל. נבון לא הסתירה את מחלתה ולא חששה להעלות את הנושא לסדר היום הציבורי, הרבתה לדבר בנושא ועודדה נשים להיבדק כדי לאפשר גילוי מוקדם של המחלה. נבון סירבה לעבור כריתה מלאה של השד, למרות שהרופאים בארץ עדיין לא היו מיומנים בניתוח הסרה חלקי, והייתה לאחת הנשים הראשונות בארץ שעברו ניתוח הסרה חלקי בשילוב עם הקרנות וכימותרפיה. שבוע לאחר ניתוח ההסרה עמדה גאה ונרגשת בקבלת הפנים לנשיא מצרים, אנואר סאדאת בחיפה.

לאחר טיפולים קשים, החלימה נבון ממחלתה והייתה בריאה במשך עשור, עד שהסרטן התפרץ בשנית. באוגוסט 1993 נפטרה אופירה נבון מסיבוך של המחלה, בגיל 57. היא נקברה בחלקת גדולי האומה בהר הרצל שבירושלים.

קודם מותה, הביעה את התקווה כי גנים ציבוריים ייקראו על שמה, וכי ילדים ילכו לשחק ב"גן אופירה". מספר רשויות מקומיות כיבדו את רצונה, וכמו כן קרויים על שמה מספר בתי ספר בארץ.
