About Oga Josiah Henryson Doherty
I found this article in the ..... Sydney Mail from Dec 10, 1930
Somerset House, London, the depository of all the will probated in Great Britain, has, it is certain, as curious a selection of these “testaments” as any in the world. But it is doubtful if even Somerset House could match its latest “exhibit” – the will of Josiah Henryson Doherty, of Lagos, Nigeria, merchant, probate was recently granted by the English Courts. For, despite his Anglo-Irish name, the late Mr Doherty was a pure-blooded African negro, whose wealth had been acquired by trading in the Dark Continent. It was well needed, judging by the will in question, which leaves £100, and £3 per month each to “seven of his wives,” various properties to “several other wives” and £500 to each male and £250 to each female of his extensive family of 42 children “by 22 of the wives names in the will.” What was done with, of by, the wives not named is left to the imagination. But it is worthy of note that, after all the domestic benefactions, the testator had sufficient thoughtfulness (and sufficient cash) to bequeath £250 the Church Missionary Society at Lagos. If the society’s missionaries are responsible as it most probable – for the wholesale job of marrying, the £250 seems a small enough recompense. On the other hand, one might well wonder that any man who had been married nearly thirty times should have any gratitude at all the officials who were responsible for the ceremonies.
In a tribute to "Road to Epe: A tribute to S.L.Edu" printed in 2012 (http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/sunday-magazine/art...)
Josiah is described "At this time, he derived great inspirations from and found remarkable models in such business icons as Oga Josiah Henryson Doherty, the “Prince Merchant of Alakoro Fame”"
