About Olaus Nels Hagna

Olaus Nels Hagna was the son of Nels N. Hagna and Berget Loftsgard, both originally from Norway.

He was born near Blooming Prairie April 21, 1874. He resided on different farms in Mower county and on November 27, 1919, was married to Miss Jennie Rierson, who survives him. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Austin and have made their home since at 609 Lansing Avenue., Austin, MN .

Olaus' life was cut short when he died as result of Automobile Accident Near Lyle, MN. His car collided with the Illinois Central Train at a crossing a mile south of Lyle, MN.

O. N. Hagna of Austin was fatally injured early Saturday afternoon, when a truck he was driving crashed into a northbound Illinois Central passenger train, at a crossing a mile south of Lyle. The train crew brought the injured man to Lyle, from where an ambulance rushed him to St. Olaf's hospital here. He died late Saturday, not having regained consciousness.

Mr. Hagna was returning from Mrs. Hagna's farm near Lyle with a load of wood. The cab of his car was enclosed and it is apparent that the unfortunate man failed to see the oncoming train. The pilot of the engine caught the car as it reached the crossing and dragged it over 400 feet before the train could be brot (sic) to a stop. Mr. Hagna was dragged with the car. When picked up his skull was fractured and his right leg broken. Dr. M. C. Melzer attended him in Lyle. Dr. P. A. Lommen was called into consultation when he reached St. Olaf's hospital. It was known that death was only a matter of time. He died late Saturday night.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, services at the home being held at 1:15 and those at St. Olaf's Lutheran church at 1:30. Rev. Henry Noss officiated. Burial was made at Sunnyside Cemetery near Mona.
